Unorthodox Keyword Research
When I look at keywords with Google’s tool or Wordtracker, I get the feeling that it is just "too convenient". I’m not sure if people get that feeling, but I just see the results and they just don’t seem right. There are definitely terms that fit, but than there are others that don’t fit.
I’ve already shown you the conventional method for keyword research, but I’m going to show you an unorthodox method (or gothy alternative method). Let’s take the weight loss niche. If you search that at the Google tool, you’ll get a lot of results. You probably don’t have much of a chance to rank for much of it, but that’s fine. If you look at the style of keywords listed, they just seem more artificial. Like "weight loss", "rapid weight loss", "weight loss pills", etc. You typically only get statements. There are a lot of people out there that don’t search that way. A lot of people just type a question into Google. What I’m trying to illustrate here is that I want to get more natural long tails that people are going to search. I’ve come up with a few methods you can use. The great thing about them is that you can expand them to much different levels because the power of your thinking is what will work in this case. All we’re going to do is use Google’s regular search engine and use it’s operators to best search for what we want. site:answers.yahoo.* "keyword" The first one is designed to search through all the answers at yahoo that contain whatever keyword you put in. Try it with ‘lose weight’ as the keyword. You should go through and see some that you’d like to use for article titles.
"Can you lose weight without sweating?" intitle:"keyword" "Powered By IP.Board" This one will allow you to search topics on Invision forums. It’s just another great way to see the way people talk about weight loss. Try it again with ‘lose weight’ as the keyword.
"Just can’t lose weight" intitle:"keyword" "Powered by phpBB" At this point you should be getting the point. The idea is to be an internet scavenger. Using Google to see the long tail keywords that regular Joe’s use when they’re on the internet. Some of them do show up in traditional keyword research, but you should find a lot that you’ve never thought of. Don’t forget to try different combinations of the operators. You may know of a lot of great sites out there where you can run operators on to find keywords. Take advantage of them. August 24 2008
