The Low Information Diet For Internet Marketers

Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking.
Albert Einstein

One of the big things from the Four-Hour Workweek was the low information diet. Right now, in our history, we are in the middle of an information revolution. Never before have so many people had so much information at the fingertips. The news is on 24hrs a day. You can get any information you want, instantly, online.

Too Much Information is Less Productive

If you’re constantly answering instant messages, checking email, updating Facebook, watching the news and researching new methods for business, when the hell do you get the time to actually do work. We have so much information that it cuts right into our productivity. We get less done, in more time.

Selective Ignorance

NEWS FLASH: YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING!!! Think about all the things you focus your attention on in a day. How much of that do you really need to know? How much time gets pissed away on a forum? How much time gets wasted on researching something you’ll never do? You’re wasting time.

  • Irrelevant to Goals
  • Negative
  • Time Consuming
  • Outside of your Control

You can bet the vast majority of your information you take in, fits into those 4 categories. Have you watched the news today? Well I haven’t because I don’t care. It’s just the same old same old. Something is being sensationalized that I don’t care about. If there’s something important I need to know, someone will probably mention it to me during the day.

Think the forums you are on. A lot of crap there. Most of the stuff isn’t going to push you forward. I do use forums for networking purposes, but I really need to cut down on it.

Look at your emails. You shouldn’t have to check it more than once a day. I have all the crap eliminated. All the articles I submit, I don’t get a single email, unless it is a rejection notice. I just filter off the crap I’m never going to read. Most of the emails in IM are automated in the first place, so forget about it. Keep your email clean.

Less Input, More Output

That’s my goal. I think that’s everyones goal. I just want to do what I need to make good money and that’s it. I don’t want to live on the computer and I’m sure you don’t want to either. The less information we take in, the more energy we have for creating more output.

Obviously, you’re going to have to get some informational input, but you should come to that point when you cross that bridge. If you’re not planning on making yourself an ebook for a few months, there is no reason to learn how you’re going to structure your sales letter. You’ll have to read the same information in a few months when you plan to do it, so don’t waste your time.

Actions

  • Check email once a day at a scheduled time
  • Check stats once a day at a scheduled time
  • Don’t watch the news
  • Network on forums, facebook, IM once a day(max). It is probably best to finish your work first
  • Keep your inbox empty

Don’t worry about the news thing. The world won’t end, so stop worrying you missed it on the news. You’ll notice your output will increase hugely and when you start making more money, you’ll thank me.
