The Emotional Roller Coaster of this Business
I was just having one of those days, on Saturday, where you just feel down about this business. Just one of those days where you think “what is the point of doing this?” It’s one of those days where you just feel like packing it in.
As you should know, I’m working on my own product and yesterday I just felt more intimidated than normal. I’m going into a major niche and I look at the sales pages of my competitors thinking how the hell can I compete with this. These competitors hire top notch copywriters and I’m trying to create my own. How the hell do I compete with these people? I know I’m not the only one that gets these feelings. You have those days when you just feel overwhelmed, where you just want to pack it in. The fact is that you’re going to have ups and downs throughout all of this. The ups are great, but it’s the downs that will kill you. Remember there will always be a high again. I’m back on a high this Sunday because I calculated my net worth for August and it improved almost 9%, which is much higher than I expected. I know for myself in the past, I gave up on lows. I’d just cut and run. Now I’ve really stuck with things and it’s producing far better results. Keep Pushing Forward, No Matter What You have to train yourself to just keep pushing forward no matter what. I know it’s hard when you feel like shit, but it pays off. You’ll come out of these lows and if you worked hard during them, you’ll have a very rewarding high. Objectively Evaluate Your Lows It’s hard to objectively do evaluations when you’re in a low because it’s such an emotional position that logic and reason don’t work that well. Sometimes sleeping on it is good enough. When you get back, start looking at things objectively. You’ll pick up that things aren’t as bad as you first thought. Set Reasonable Goals For Reasonable Expectations You’ve probably heard that the number one reason marriages break up is money, but that’s not true. Money is typically a subject of the bigger picture; expectations. If you get married thinking you’re going to have a certain life with your spouse, only to find out it is totally different, you’re probably going to get divorced. Also another reason is when you and your spouse have totally different expectations of what you expect of each other. The same thing applies with this business. If you set yourself these really high expectations, you’ll always miss them and they really bring you down. I know self-help books suggest that you set big goals, but I really disagree in the way. It’s good to know where your end goal is in a more flexible sense, but you shouldn’t be worrying about making a million dollars before you make ten dollars. One Step At A Time Just remember, it’s on step at a time. If you have a good day, keep taking steps forward. If you have a bad day, keep taking steps forward. If you take steps everyday, you’ll continuously grow. August 31 2008
