The Change Jar Sucks
I thought it would be nice to do another personal finance type of post. I think if you're trying to make money as an affiliate and you can't properly manage your money, than what's the point? I hate change jars. I hate it when people try to save money with their change jar. I think it is a huge joke. I think it's counter productive and just a waste of time.
In Canada we have a lot more change than Americans. We have a dollar coin and a two dollar coin. I think my mom is the complete anti-thesis of me when it comes to saving pocket change in a jar. She talks about how this is "saving" money and it adds up over time. Labor Costs Don't you understand that when you fill up this jar that you're going to eventually have to sort it, roll it up and take it into the bank? I'm not saying that is necessarily a lot of labor, but it will eat up a few hours of your time. Rolling the pennies is about the least productive time you'll spend. Every roll you finish is 50 cents completed. Lack of Will Power Surprisingly it isn't the labor that gets to me, it's the fact that people say they're "saving". Saving pocket change is the most retarded form of saving and it shows a total lack of will power when it comes to REAL SAVING. If you want to save a $100/month, move the $100 from your checkings account to your savings account. EASY! The System I use I do this much differently. I try to save my paper money and put that into my savings account. I'll transfer money from my checkings account right into my savings account. It is a form of will power that I force myself to exert. I do have change jars, but their purpose isn't for saving. I actually have 4 change jars. I have one empty whey protein jug for pennies, one mason jar for nickels, one mason jar for dimes and one mason jar for quarters and higher. What you should pick out of this is that sorting is done by the jar system. I'm not going to throw mixed change in one big jar and sort it later. I make an effort to spend this change. My mother makes an effort to not. My mother will go buy a coffee for a $1.50. Instead of using the change in the change jar, she'll break a $5. It's just retarded. If I'm going to buy a $1.50 coffee, I'm going to get 15 dimes out of the jar and use that. If I go down to the convenience store to pick up some Pepsi, I'll bring some nickels. My Whole Point I guess what I'm trying to get at is saving bills, saving real money. When you save change, you have to create more change to save more. That means you have to consume more. Just man up and save money by transferring it into a savings account. Screw this change crap. Use your change to buy all the little things of life, instead of breaking bills. March 29 2009 |
