Statistical Masturbation
We all sort of get in that funk where we just check our stats a lot. It just feels good looking at something doing good, but don’t let that fool you. Getting caught up in your stats is nothing more than masturbation that gets you no where.
Checking Stats is Passive When you start getting overboard with your stats and checking them a lot, you’re just being passive. You make no money checking your stats, nor do you increase any chance of revenue. It’s just another form of procrastination. You’re delaying some inevitable work that you don’t want to do. Well, do it. Even if your stats are going bad today, is there really anything you can do about? Typically, the results from marketing techniques don’t happen for at least a day or longer, so why check it so often? Checking Stats is like a Roller Coaster The thing that is hard about checking your stats all the time is because it turns into this emotional roller coaster. When you’re rolling in the sales or rolling in the SE traffic, you feel like a million bucks. The fact is that you have downs too. If you don’t see a sale today, it just gets you down. It just really slumps your work. Schedule Stats The best thing you can do is schedule the time you check your stats. This way you’re forced to work at work time and you check stats when you check them. I check mine first thing in the morning and I check them to get the stats for yesterday. The reason is that yesterday is complete. A lot of sales I get come when I’m in bed. Just look at your stats that are complete, so you don’t have to piss and moan about incomplete days. The morning also offers you the opportunity to act on the stats of yesterday. If your sales are down for yesterday, you know today you’re going to have to do a little more to make it up. It’s really that simple. Just stop the statistical masturbation and do the necessary work. If you’re on a mini-retirement and you get into this funk, you won’t be having fun. July 10 2008
