Start Avoiding Forums
Well, I just finished my "Essentials Week" with great success. I was pretty happy about not checkings stats, forums or anything. All I did was build content, build links and interlink.
It's the weekend and I've taken a peak in at the forums to see what was going on and it's the same old bullshit. All of my readers are aware that I will say it like I see it and I should of listened to my mentor. I had a mentor back years ago in the adult webmaster industry. His advice was logical, it made sense and it was long term. When I mentioned that I was going to try more mainstream stuff - he gave me advice. Telling me to apply the same tactics, but one of his pieces of advice was that I shouldn't go to webmaster forums. Here's why... Everyone has an agenda You have to watch yourself on forums because you don't know how genuine the information on there may be. Everyone is selling something. Everyone has a bias. Trust me, I've fallen for it. I haven't gone out and purchased anything, but I read through posts that I thought were genuine good and it was nothing more than the person trying to sell. This happened at the Warrior Forum, I pm'ed this person and they replied back that I could buy their product to do it. Take a look at this post over at digitalpoint. From what I know, this person is making a logical comment about Clickbank. But if you look at his signature he has a link to his fraud site. He has a bias. He has an agenda and you can't take his information at face value. No one is sharing the good "secrets" Do you think some guy is going to come along and share their great strategies with you? It's not going to happen. There is absolutely no benefit to sharing it for the world to use and abuse. Ignorance Reigns It seems like the stupidest myths and advice seem to be the conversation on these forums. Like I can tell you what will be discussed on the digitalpoint clickbank forum tomorrow... social bookmarking, squidoo and hubpages. What seems to be hot now is that people social bookmark their articles on directories. I don't even feel like responding to the stupidity of that shit. Another thing you'll see around these forums is that you shouldn't link your sites together if they're on the same IP number. This advice was true back in the 90's because the probability of a group of sites all being linked together from the same IP address was slim. The fact is that we have run out of IP addresses along time ago and it isn't that big of a deal anymore to link from the same IP. Google Page Rank is another popular one. Warning: Don't go to the Google forum on digitalpoint or you'll end up shooting yourself over the stupidity of that forum. Page Rank does absolutely nothing for you. It's just a green bar. It doesn't give you more searches. The only thing I've noticed about it is that your pages get indexed faster and typically a PR1 is fast enough. The people that spread the happy news about PR are the ones that are selling high PR backlinks or the people buying high PR backlinks. ***AGENDA*** Groupthink Groupthink is a term that came from George Orwell's "Nineteen Eight-Four". It is defined as... the forces that tend to suppress or resist divergent thinking when a group is working to accomplish a specific task within a limited period of time. It simply means when you're in a group you will inevitably gravitate toward the same thinking. Or another way of looking it is that no one thinks for themselves. The Psychology of Consistency I've been reading "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" (Link in the right menu) and it's quite interesting. I'm going to start making posts on psychology because you'll learn so much about people with it. It's amazing. As human beings we are driven to be consistent. That's how our mind works. It's sort of like politics. I can explain a very logical position to someone and they'll flat out reject it. The reason is that it isn't consistent with who they are. Their view is consistent. Applying that to a webmaster forum is simple, people aren't going to respond to logical thinking because it isn't consistent with who they are. If a person makes their living online social bookmarking, it doesn't matter how much logic I throw at them, they're not going to stop doing it. Nor will they allow any criticism of it. This post got a specific response from a person. They didn't seem to like what I said. No matter how logical it is, it wasn't logical to them. It wasn't consistent and you have to understand that. Everyone has some sort of bias toward a method. You're Just Wasting Fucking Time The worst thing about forums is that it's masturbation. You think you're actually getting somewhere, but you're not. You're just wasting time. Go do some real work. Use your head too. You don't need a forum to tell you all this crap. You can figure out what SE's are looking for and how you should construct your day. Build content for YOU. Build backlinks for YOU. Don't use spammy methods that everyone else is using. Be smart, use your head and WWGD (What Would Google Do?) November 1 2008
