Results of the Marketing hype Experiment

I made a post a few weeks ago asking the question; does marketing hype increase views and CTR? Well, the results are in and they may surprise you.

I’ll first point out that this experiment was done by taking averages. It is impossible for me to focus completely on the variable of “hype words” in the title and resource boxes of articles. By taking averages and comparing them against normal articles submitted in the same time period, I should get a decent result.

Results

  • Hyped articles received 18% less views.
  • Average hyped article CTR was 19.3%
  • Average normal article CTR was 22.3%

Conclusion

The conclusion is that the hyped up articles under performed my regular articles. These types of “normal” articles didn’t have provocative hyped up titles. They were typically just long tail keywords.

I doubt if any of my readers did a similar case study to compare results. I guess if I was to explain why these results happened, it would be due to the fact that they’re articles. Naturally people that are looking for general information, really aren’t looking for hyped up words because they know that is selling.
