Picking The Right Web Hosting
The prevailing information on hosting that is being taught to all the mainstream webmasters really antagonizes me. Hosting is important and I see way to many people wasting their time on the shittiest hosts I've ever seen.
When I started as a webmaster, I started in the Adult area - so that's why I've learned a lot of things much different than the mainstream. Hosting is an extremely important choice in the adult world because people need their porn quick and if they can't see it fast enough - they're gone and you're out of money. I thought it was about time to start a post on hosting and show you exactly what you need to know when making that choice. It's important, trust me. You Get What You Pay For I paid for hosting and I always paid for more expensive services, but I saw these other hosts at unbelievable low prices offering more services. I thought one day to try it out. You know, it wouldn't hurt? Let's just say, the first week my site was offline more than online. All those little uptime meters you see on those sites are complete and utter bullshit. 99.8% uptime my ass. You have to come back to the realization that if you pay $2.50/month for hosting, you really can't complain. Like, a meal at McDonald's costs more than that. There's No Such Thing As "Unlimited" Yeah, a lot of hosting plans are offering you unlimited everything if you sign up for their cheap ass service. Well, the fine print says that you'll never in a million years get much out of it. They'll suspend your ass into the ground before you even come close. Sucks. Recognize that you're not getting unlimited everything and don't expect that you can make a 100 mySQL databases either. "Shared Hosting" is SHARED I don't think a lot of people really understand the fact that they're on a server with a bunch of other websites. This sort of fits in with the unlimited point, but there are assholes on that server that think "Unlimited" really does mean "UNLIMITED". They run the bandwidth up, create a 1000 mySQL databases with a script and run the server right into the ground. Did you cause the problem? No. Does your site go down? Yes. When you're on a server with other people, you have to be aware of what other people are capable of. If they can fill the harddrives, crash the mySQL database, bring down PHP and a load of other things, than it isn't worth your time.
I thought it was important to come up with a dialogue of what you should be looking for. To help you make a much better choice because people really don't know what to look for. 1. SPEED - You have to make sure you have a host that is notorious for speed. Adult webhosts (like the one I'm using) are all about speed. That's what they and their clients strive for. 2. A Plan Within Your Means - You want to stay within your means as best as you can. If you only have 1 domain name and you're only planning on having 1 for the next few months, than you don't need a huge hosting plan. Get a plan that is for 1 domain name, with 1 mySQL database and 100MB of space. It sounds like crap, but you're hosting will rock. You'll be put on the same server as the people with the same plan. 3. Avoid Unlimited As Much As Possible - I tried to avoid it. I couldn't get it completely with my host. I basically had the need for about 1GB of space and a lot of domains. I didn't care about having tons of mySQL databases. Well, I found a balance. The unlimited mySQL databases exist, but I just have a gig of space. 4. Stellar Support - This is what I like the most about my host, the support. Trust me, when things are running good, you probably won't care, but when things go down - you want someone good. Every single time I've contacted support, they replied within 15-30 minutes. I use DigiDotz which is a regular hosting company when you look at it, but it is tailored to adult webmasters. The servers are in the US, support is good and they always go the extra mile.
