Newbie Project: Is Your 404 Making You Money?
I’m often amazed at people that don’t do anything with their 404 page. They just leave it blank or forward it back to their index page. I don’t like that. I think you’re wasting potential sales.
There are a lot of things that do surprise me and since there are so many webmasters that don’t know basic HTML, there must be some people out there that don’t know what a 404 page is. Well, if someone goes to a page that doesn’t exist on your server, they’ll get an error. Be default, a 404 page or 403 forbidden will come up. If you have wordpress installed as your root, you’ll get a 404 on your wordpress. Check out this link http://www.amxpert.com/purple-monkey-dishwasher/ As you can see, I’ve really done nothing with mine yet since this isn’t a profit seeking blog. A lot of people don’t have one or just forward them to a index and I really don’t like that. The reason is that you have a surfer in a place they shouldn’t be and you can treat them dirty. It’s as simple as that. To get traffic to our sites, we have to have the “nice side”. An informative blog, an informative article, video, whatever. You have to have some content for a person to come to your site. But this surfer is in the wrong area. Not sure how they got there and I don’t care. Having no 404 page is stupid or having it forward back to your content pages(like a blog) is just giving them a free pass. A 404 page should be a filter that sends people to sponsors. You should know how filters work by the past Newbie Projects, so it’s not complicated. Make a table 3×3 and put a sponsor in each cell. If your site is about Fitness, than you’d put in a different subniche of fitness in each cell. Weight Loss, Muscle Building, etc. If they click on muscle building, they goto a muscle building sponsor. Easy and not complicated. Setting it up takes a few minutes. If you’re an HTML guy, like me you just need to add in a simple .htaccess code. You’ll still have to do this if you have wordpress installed in a subdirectory.
Easy. If you have Wordpress as your root, it takes on the 404 pages automatically. You’re going to have to edit a 404.php page and I’m going to leave that up to you to figure out because some Wordpress skins have it and some don’t. July 25 2008
