Newbie Project: Christmas Subniches
Okay, I think it's very important that everyone gets down to work for Christmas. We have around 69 days to rank for a lot of different content. I know everyone can get pages indexed within a week, but we want Google to at least trust these pages and give us some of that odd long tail Christmas traffic that doesn't showup in keyword tools.
This project is going to focus on subniches of society. Not products or something like that. I want you to think of the market place; the people that buy these products as the sub niches. There are so many different types of people out there that exist. The more subniche you go, the more easy it will be to dominate. This will probably be the most time consuming part. Some of the more obvious niches of the market would be...
As you can see those are a little big. You're probably not going to get any substantial traffic or sales in 69 days going after the big niches of the market. You want something small and very subniche. If you're having trouble with this, go walk down a busy sidewalk or sit on a bench where people walk by. Start stereotyping them. Start putting them into niches of the market and that'll get you into the mood. I have a few of these subniches in mind, which I won't mention. But I thought of one as an example. Everyone has heard of hockey, but that's probably still too big. Most people outside of Canada wouldn't know this, but there is ringette. It's played by girls and quite popular here. This is guaranteed subniche. For mentioning ringette and Christmas in this post, I'll probably end up getting some long tail Christmas traffic to this site, even though I'm not selling anything for it. That's what you want to put your time and energy into. Find that subniche. The more unique and small it is, the better chance you have of dominating it. Finding Something to Sell You'll have to find something decent to sell. You can't use ebooks for this. No one is going to say "Merry Christmas, I just emailed you an ebook". We need real products and if you hit up a really small subniche, you're going to have to look for some good stuff. Obviously it can be a little tough, but you should be able to find something, so invest the time in it. Sales Pages What you're going to create is sales pages for each product you decide to sell. I'm going to say, don't make a big long page. Try to keep the content of what you're selling in a typically sized screen. You're going to have to have text on these pages or you're just not going to rank. It has to be unique and it has to be littered with Christmas innuendo. That means words like Christmas, Santa Clause, Present, Gift, etc. You're not going to be able to figure out all the long tail keywords that involve Christmas like words in them, so don't try. Find some good keywords for your subniche. The Christmas like keywords on your page should be enough to pick up any of the searches that might come in with the extra Christmas terms. People are going to probably search for what they want first, rather than the niche + Christmas gift or something like that. Take the time to give the page a Christmas like look. It doesn't take much. You can find free GIF Christmas lights that are like 2kb, so they're practically nothing on the page. It just gives it that Christmas feeling. Linking It All Together Obviously, I wasn't going to ask you to throw these individual sales pages into a subdirectory. I'm going to let you choose how you do this. I've talked numerous times about how to make a hub in past newbie projects. Or you can set up a linking circle. That means each sales page links to another, which links to another, etc. It just goes around in a circle. Conclusion It's your choice how you promote this. As long as it is indexed and has some backlinks coming it's way, it should start to rank for keywords. October 17 2008
