Newbie Project: Back it up!

I thought this was a very important thing to do after hearing a horror story about someone that lost all their files because their host crashed. Backing up is such a simple thing and by doing it you can eliminate a lot of headaches.

I know for me, I have all my HTML backed up. HTML is easy to backup, so I just have a directory on my computer that mimics that of my server. I do have content on Wordpress and I know a lot of people use Wordpress because they’re too lazy to learn HTML.

As I ask for this week, you’re going to back up your shit. It doesn’t matter if your hosting company does super dooper backups every hour. These companies fuck up. It’s your responsibility to protect your assets, so be smart and back it up.

For HTML files, just make a directory on your computer that is identical to the structure of your hosting server. When you make a new page, build it right in the directory on your computer. It’s very easy. This will keep all your shit up-to-date no matter what.

Since a lot of people are using Wordpress and other such programs, information is stored in a mySQL database, which requires a different sort of backup.

For Wordpress I use Wordpress Database Backup plugin. The reason is simple; automation. I can set it up to automatically backup the database daily, weekly, monthly and send a copy to my email.

If you have a forum or something along those lines, you might be forced to back it up manually, but ideally you’d want something automated so you don’t forget.

It may not seem important, but do it. Until you actually lose your files or have your hosting account hacked/exploited you can see a years worth of work disappear.
