How to Rock RSS Feeds

I've been spending a lot of work time lately on RSS feeds and taking full advantage of what they have to offer (Hat Tip: Dan). I've found that there is so many different applications of this that you can use and apply. The more you think outside the box, the better.

What is RSS?

RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication. Simple is the keyword to focus on. A lot of people think that RSS is just something that comes with your wordpress blog. When you update it, it lets the world know you did. It's sort of like that. Blogs have made RSS feeds popular.

It's just a simple XML file that you can edit in notepad. RSS feeds don't have to be associated with blogs. I created a feed for listing all the new landing pages I create, for any article I upload to my site on a simple HTML page. Even this "blog", which is HTML only, uses an RSS feed.

The value of creating an RSS feed comes from pinging it. When you ping it, you instantly get backlinks to all your newest content.

How do I make a feed?

If you have a blog like wordpress, it makes the RSS feed itself and does the pinging itself. If you put anything on your site, like HTML, you have to manually add it to an RSS feed and ping it.

I have two example feeds you can look at. This site's feed and a simple feed. The feed for this site is actually a complete copy of a wordpress feed. It's designed to simulate it. When you click on the feed, right click and view source to see what it looks like. Feel free to copy it to notepad and edit the obvious values. The simple text can be saved to your computer and just rename it to .xml and you got yourself a feed.

Your feed should be roughly 10-15 items long. So as you add new ones to the top, take the old ones off the bottom.

Anytime I create a new page, be it an article, landing page, sales letter, filter, whatever, I add it to the feed and ping it.

How do I ping feeds?

This is really the easiest part. You go to one of the following sites...

Autopinger
Ping-o-Matic

There's probably a lot more, but I can't be bothered to add them. Put your feed address into one of the sites forms. Only use one of them. You hit ping and it will start pinging all the services. Bookmark this page because in the future if you want to ping your feed, all you do is visit the bookmark. Keep it simple, stupid.

Don't ping your feed every 10 minutes or you'll get your site banned. Put some space inbetween pings.

Now that we have the basics of feeds complete, we can get into the fun stuff.

Rocking RSS: Automated RSS Directories

There is a really good thing about automated RSS directories and that's the fact that they're not human reviewed before they go up. That means my RSS feed of landing pages for products are freely accepted and get instant backlinks everytime I produce a new one.

Here is a list of automated ones I've found. It's a list that will be on going and growing. Anytime I make a new feed, I'll have to submit it. I'll have this page bookmarked, so you should as well.

FeedFury Requires Registration
Feedage Requires Registration
Feedsee
RSS Micro
FeedBase
We Blog A Lot
RSS Mountain
RSS Motron
RSS Network
Read A Blog
Ice Rocket
Feedest
Blog Digger

Remember, this list will be growing, so make sure you bookmark it.

Rocking RSS: Human Edited RSS Directories

There are an endless amount of RSS directories out there. It's just like link directories, so I couldn't possibly list them all. I'm currently developing my own list, which I'll post here, that you can use. I'm testing a lot of these directories to see what I can get away with. I made subdirectories that look like a blog, but it's me just trying to sell products on it. Some places actually accepted it.

Here is what I have for now, but it will grow in the future.

Blog Catalog Requires Registration

Rocking RSS: Article Directory Rockin'

I hear people say that you should build links to your articles on article directories. I think this is the most asinine thing ever. Yes, building links will help the ranking of an article, but if I'm building links - I'm building them for me, not for someone else's site.

Taking your articles and social bookmarking them is just so damn time consuming. Don't you wish there was a better way? The power of RSS feeds.

Just about every article directory out there has an RSS feed for your newest articles.

That link will give you the personal page of your pen names (case sensitive). Grab the RSS feed on the page for your articles and submit it to the automated RSS directories. I doubt the human edited ones will accept this type of feed. Check with the other article directories you submit too because they probably have RSS feeds for your articles too. That means everytime you publish an article, the feed is pinged and you get a bunch of backlinks. That's the easiest way of doing it.

Rocking RSS: Web 2.0 Style

Guess what? Most of your Web 2.0 (That's social bookmarking like stumbleupon) have RSS feeds associated with your account. Everytime you give something a thumbs up on your Stumbleupon account, it is added to your RSS feed. Same thing applies for twitter and all the other stuff out there.

I hope you get what you're supposed to do. Any Web 2.0 sites that have RSS feeds associated with your account should be added to the automated RSS directories.

Rocking RSS: The Philosophy

Here is the deal... anything with an RSS feed that will result in you getting more links, traffic or exposure should be taken and submitted to RSS directories. I'm sure there are lots of things I haven't listed here. I know some forums have RSS feeds. I'm sure there's other things I haven't talked about and I'm sure there will be new things in the future.

If you see an RSS feed that could help you any way, submit it.

Bam. Now you know how to rock RSS feeds, so start rockin'!
