How to Research Keywords

I’m going to show you how to research keywords because this is the most important lesson you need to learn. Effectively going after the right keywords can lead you to a lot of targeted sales and that’s what we’re all looking for.

Long Tail Keywords

You want to go after what is called long tail. That just means a longer keyword. Typically, whatever niche you’re in, you won’t be able to get the top spot for one or two words. If you’re niche is weight loss, than you’re probably not going to be in the position of getting the top 10 in that for a long old time (if you’re lucky). Long tail keywords are related to weight loss, but they’re longer, get less searches, but have less competition.

So instead of going after ‘weight loss’, you go after ‘weight loss for pregnant women’. Understand?

Finding them

You obviously want to know which keywords to go after, as well as how much they’re searched and how competitive they are.

Typically, Google’s Keyword Tool for Adwords would be a secondary tool, but as of yesterday they’re showing how many searches a keyword gets per month.

I typically used the free Wordtracker with Gtrends, which gave relatively good results. Since the Adwords tool is giving all the data now, they might be run out of business. Who knows?

Dealing With Competition

This is the hard part because you’re going to have a site that will grow with authority over time. Meaning, it will get stronger in the search engines.

To figure out the competition for a long tail keyword is to goto Google and search it with quotations around it. This will give you the exact number of pages that have that exact keyword.

I find that anything under 50,000 competing sites, will do good in article directories like EzineArticles. If your site is relatively new, you probably won’t be able to rank for anything but under 1000 for your site. It changes with time though and the more you build at your site, the more competition you can take on.

Experiment With It

Take the time and experiment with it. See what happens. You’ll find some gold in there that have like 10,000 competition and gets 100 unique searches a day. Try them out and see what is ranking in the top 10 for you and what isn’t. You’ll get a rough idea of what you should be aiming for.

Remember, always do keyword research. You always should be going after some sort of keyword. Even if you don’t get into the top 10 with it, it’s still worth doing. Six months from now, it could bump into the top 10 and you get a lot of traffic.
