Firefox Addons - Productive or Anti-Productive?
I’m a big fan of the addon features that Firefox has. It’s just a great way to expand on the experience of surfing the web. The problem really lies in productivity. How much of these addons is really required to get the work done and how much is just another time waster.
Our goal is to be as productive as possible, while we work, so we ultimately spend less time working. Obviously, we are webmasters to have our own flexible schedules, so we can do what we want, but a lot of people spend unbelievable amounts of time on the computer, so there is something wrong with the productivity of work. What is unproductive? This is easy from an objective point of view, but a lot of people will have a hard time cutting a lot of this out. To sum it up simply, it distracts you from doing the real work that needs to be done. The emphasis is on REAL WORK. The most distracting one is email. There is absolutely no emails that you’ll receive as a webmaster that are super urgent and would warrant interrupting quality work time. Remove your Gmail checking addon or whatever you have to automatically check email. You should only check emails at scheduled times. I’m sure there are a lot of other things that you could dump, if you really wanted to. I understand there are a lot of tools that are used, but not all the time that can be very distracting. This is most obvious with the web 2.0 stuff like Stumbleupon. If you can’t stop yourself from clicking the Stumble button while you’re working, than remove it. Anything that is a distraction should be removed. You can always make a second Firefox profile for different things. You could have your “Work” profile, where you do the grunt work, than your "Submit" profile for doing your other things that may require web 2.0 stuff. The goal is to maximize your productivity, so you can work a hell of a lot less. Seriously, if you look at how much goofing off and unnecessary tasks you do in a day (like checking mail as soon as it comes in), you’d realize that you probably could cut your day in half if you just did the "REAL WORK". What is productive? It will depend on what you need to accomplish your work and I require very little. I don’t have any explicit addons for "work". I just have things like adblock and del.icio.us. I don’t use del.icio.us for work, I just put my bookmarks in there. Most of the stuff you’ll end up having is just unproductive crap. Just take the time and realize that it’s not helping you any. We all know what the "Real Work" is and what the "distractions" are. July 22 2008
