Experiment: Finding Another EzineArticles

I’m always talking about experimenting and I want to share an experiment that I’ve been doing the last two weeks because I’ve learned a lot of great lessons from this.

Objective: I started this because I wanted to find an alternative to EzineArticles (EA). I was relying on it to heavily and I felt that this wasn’t smart. If it ever got slapped by Google or had a problem that I’d run into trouble

Currency State: It is currently incomplete. I’ll hopefully finish it, but it will take a little more time. I have invested over 180 unique articles across 26 article directories. I’ve been aiming for 10 articles per directory.

Lessons Learned: I haven’t completed this yet, but I learned a lesson that is so important and so profitable that I missed it. I used to believe in it, but I lost my way, so I want to identify that.

Forums aren’t a bad place to learn, but eventually you have to leave. There is a fundamental problem with them, which I’ll call “groupthink”. What happens is that the same generic ideas and beliefs are passed on so much that everyone just believes in the same crap. It happened to me I’ll admit.

One of the big misconceptions that I followed that came from groupthink was that there was no point in submitting to other article directories besides EA because none can match the traffic. I can’t believe I fell into groupthink, but that statement is so wrong, on so many levels.

Here is what I’ve learned from my experiment. Even though a lot of these smaller directories don’t produce much in the way of traffic, from my experience, it is more targeted and more likely to buy. EA has a lot of traffic and if you’re not hitting the top 10 of Google than you’re just getting “EA Traffic” which isn’t necessarily the buying type. Personally, I think of a lot of it is webmasters looking for good content.

These smaller sites don’t have a loyal base of viewers so they rely heavily on long tail keywords. If you’re unaware of them, they tend to be more targeted and makes the chances of selling better. I’ve tried submitting a few articles for a related product I didn’t make a sale for on EA and within two days after submitting it to various smaller directories, I had a sale for it. And this happened for a few different products I tried.

Even though this experiment didn’t desire to measure sale-ability of a directory, just the traffic, I’m confident in saying that these smaller directories have a much more targeted surfer base and ones that are more likely to buy.

Conclusion: You should take the time to use both. Things don’t have to be black and white, where you use one or the other. This isn’t like voting for your favorite politician. You can use both.
