Before You Quit Your Job
I wasn’t lucky enough to quit my job to go do internet marketing. I quit my job, than decided to do internet marketing. I got stressed out, called in sick a bunch of days in a row, than decided to stop calling.
If you’re new to this and thinking about jumping into this, you really need to evaluate things. There is a lot about internet marketing that people don’t readably talk about, which paints a less flattering picture.
I’m sure if you’re at this blog, you already know the benefits and are sold on them, so I don’t really need to go into it. There are some very important aspects that you need to address before you ever quit that job because at least you know that income is consistent. Cost Of Living You really need to sit down and evaluate your cost of living. Obviously the lower the cost, the more likelihood that you’ll make enough to sustain it. If you have a nice house and expensive lifestyle with your family, you have a lot of room to cut. Just remember, not all people around you are willing to give up such a lifestyle and possibly yourself. Start Part-Time This is probably about the most obvious advice I can give. Why give up a consistent paycheck, for this unknown? I know getting anywhere in life requires risk, but you have to be reasonable about this. You could be a huge lazy idiot goof off and get nothing done. There’s no reason for that. You should be able to make a pretty decent amount of money doing this part time. This takes a little more combined work, but it’s worth it since it makes the work risk free. Have Savings You need to have some sort of savings. You’re not going to pay all your bills the first month, so be realistic. It is a good idea to save up 3-6 months of living expenses, so you don’t go broke. The number one reason businesses fail in the first year is that they go broke before they even get a chance to make any money. – This should be enough to get you started into this full time, but there is one more important thing to understand. Things won’t always be consistent and there is one question to ask… If Everything Went Bad, What Would I do? This is an exercise from the Four Hour Workweek. Basically, when you take these risks (or lack there of) you usually assume these horrible outcomes. You won’t make any money. You’ll lose your house. Etc. Well, this is similar to that. You’re going to run into good periods and bad periods in internet marketing. Let’s say you had a bad summer. Everything went to shit and you’re not taking in hardly enough money. What would you do? Well, there’s actually a lot when you’re in a constructive mood and it can actually take away a lot of the stress of failure. I’m not really looking for solutions like “borrow from my parents” or “sell stuff on eBay”, even though they work. I’m looking for solutions that are actually sustainable. Obviously there are a lot of other jobs you could do, especially around the community. You could print off some fliers and tell people you’ll give them a free estimate on washing there windows. It sounds stupid, but seriously, you can make a grand easy in a day, if you needed too. There’s other things you can do on the computer. You can actually provide services and get paid for it fast. You can write articles, design webpages (for both local businesses and online customers), do programming, etc. I think for an exercise, at least for the computer stuff, you should try providing some service like this that will get you paid, before you ever jump into this. If you already have, try doing it before you run into economic hardship. Freelancing can be quite profitable, but it’s typically a big money maker when you start with it. Take article writing. I’m currently offering that as a service and I’m doing it with higher quality for more money. People aren’t clamoring for my work. The reason is that they don’t know my work and it’s a lot to invest. Most people have to start out selling it at $2/article to get a client base before they can raise their prices. I think it’s important to do this because knowing you can physically make the money (it’s in your bank account), can really make you feel better. — Once you learn that you can make money on demand, easily if needed, you take away a lot of stress. You want to take bigger risks because you can always deal with the outcome. The more prepared you are at going into IM, the more likely you’ll succeed. If you’re not prepared, the chance of losing go up. September 10 2008
